Pit bulls’ bad reputation for being vicious fighting dogs likely traces back to their origins in England, where they were bred first as fighters for the absolutely gross sport of bear-and bullbaiting, then used in a sport called ratting, where a bunch of rats were put in a pit and dogs would compete to see who could kill the most. Gross, gross, gross, gross, gross. But pit bulls aren’t bred to be vicious—they’re bred to be strong and intelligent, and their stereotypical ferocity is often a result of how they’re treated by the bad humans around them, not something rotten in their nature. Pit bulls are, in fact, often gentle and great family dogs. In a dog behavioral test performed by the American Temperament Test Society, pit bulls placed second with an 83.4 percent pass rate, beat out only by the Labrador retriever.
